NGH makes Nursing Times Workforce Awards finals in two categories

We’re pleased to announce that NGH has made the shortlist in two categories of the Nursing Times Workforce Awards.  The Awards recognise and reward the excellent work being done by employers to support the nursing and midwifery workforce across the NHS.

NGH has been shortlisted in the Best Workplace for Learning and Development (up to 1500 nursing staff) and the Best Employer for Staff Recognition categories.

Sheran Oke, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Patient Experience, said ‘I’m delighted that these two important initiatives have been shortlisted.  It’s validation for all the hard work our staff put in every day in caring for patients and each other.  We believe that supporting and developing a committed and dedicated workforce is key to being able to provide the best possible care to our patients.  I’m extremely proud of all our staff at NGH and look forward to the Awards ceremony in September.’

The best employer for staff recognition nomination is for the work undertaken to become the first hospital in the UK to achieve Pathway to Excellence® accreditation.  We launched the DAISY awards to recognise the dedication and commitment of members of our nursing and midwifery team who go above and beyond to provide the best possible care.  The Awards don’t just involve the recipients, all members of the ward or department are included in the celebrations and our estates team and volunteers are also involved on the day to put up banners and prepare the Awards trolley. 

The nomination for ‘best workplace for learning and development’ is related to the creation of a prospectus for staff clearly outlining the learning and development opportunities available to them.  The project also included a refresh of intranet content, which now includes a ‘make-a-wish’ function so people can request training not currently on offer, a social media group to celebrate and share learning opportunities and achievements and a trust-wide launch of the new prospectus.

Both the initiatives have helped the trust achieve a reduction in turnover and a reduced vacancy rate as well as a decrease in the number of nursing-related complaints and improved morale.  And, since the DAISY Awards NGH has gone on to launch the Everyday Hero Awards for non-nursing and midwifery staff.
