Face masks and coverings to be worn by all hospital outpatients and visitors

Visitors to Northampton General Hospital and people attending outpatients' appointments must wear a face mask or face covering at all times to protect them and others from Coronavirus (COVID019) from Monday 15 June 2020.

Dr Sonia Swart, the hospital's chief executive, said 'Evidence has confirmed that face coverings can help reduce the risk of transmission if someone is suffering from coronavirus but not showing symptoms  - if they are asymptomatic.  That is one of the reasons why we are now asking all members of the public who come to our hospital site to wear a mask or face covering when they arrive.   This is to help protect them and others.  This can be a fabric, non-medical mask.  In the event of an emergnecy a face mask will be provided.  However, we urge people to think about having their own face coverings.

'We are also asking that, as well as wearing a face covering or mask, visitors and outpatients continue to use the observe good hand hygiene, use the hand sanitiser provided at all our entrances and on wards and departments, when they enter and leave.  It is essential that we all maintain good hand hygiene at all times and wash our hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, espcially after using the toilet and before and after eating.'

Visitors to the hospital site from Monday will also find there is new signage to help remind them of the importance of observing the two meter social distancing rules.

NHS staff already wear face masks in clinical areas and this new guidance now applies to everyone who works in the hospital.

Guidance on how to wear and make a cloth face covering is available from the government website.

A reminder - please observe the following advice:

  • As well as wearing a face covering or mask, we would ask that visitors use the hand sanitiser avialable at all entrances and exits, and in all wards and departments, on entering and learing
  • Ensure you maintain a two metre distance between you and others wherever possible
  • Wash your hands after visiting the toilet or before you eat or drink
