MSc Quality Improvment



Our MSc in Quality Improvement & Patient Safety is a part-time three year course aimed at health and social care professionals who wish to develop a greater understanding and expertise in quality improvement and patient safety with strong emphasis on practical application.

Students will benefit from senior clinical mentorship as each module will offer a flexible mix of taught elements and project work based in their practice, further supported by the Simulation Suite and online learning resources.


Study programme

The programme is a part-time 3-year taught Master's course.

The course is divided into seven core taught modules, and one year-long extended quality improvement project.

In the first year, you will cover the fundamentals of quality improvement (QI), measurement and analysis of quality improvement and improvement methodology.

In the second year, you will cover patient and public engagement in QI, educating for QI, leading and implementing change and innovation in QI.

The third year involves the delivery of an extended QI project.

There is the option to undertake this programme as either a Postgraduate Certificate (12 month) or Postgraduate Diploma (24 month).

Graduates of this course will have acquired the strong quality improvement methodological background needed to deliver successful and substantial improvements at a local and larger level.

Entry requirements

Students must be employed within a health and social care related environment and have either:

  • Evidence of achievement of an appopriate healthcare or data related bachelor's degree with honours
  • Students who do not have a relevant bachelor's degree must satisfy the university that by virtue of their professional standing, qualification and/or training that they are fit to register for, and to benefit them from, their programme of study.

Tuition fees and funding

The overall cost to complete the MSc Quality Improvement & Patient Safety is £9000. This equates to £3000 per annum.
