About the Unit

The Neonatal Transitional Care Unit is a 6/7 bedded unit nestled within the postnatal ward here at Northampton General Hospital.

The Neonatal Transitional Care Unit supports resident mothers as primary care providers for their babies with care requirements in excess of normal newborn care, but which are not sufficient to require admission to the Local Neonatal Unit. The Neonatal Transitional Care Unit achieves the overarching principle of keeping mother and baby together and facilitates parenting and attachment and the establishment of infant feeding, whilst enabling safe and effective management of a baby with additional care needs.

About the team

The neonatologists who provide cover for the Neonatal Unit also oversee the Neonatal Transitional Care Unit.

The nursing staff are led by the Transitional Care Neonatal Lead under the responsibility of the Matron for Child Health. There will be a neonatal nurse, a midwife and a support worker caring for you and your baby during your stay on the Neonatal Transitional Care Unit.

The neonatal outreach service may also be involved in the care of your baby to support the transition to home and support with community visits if your baby requires their services.

Transitional Care Neonatal Lead Nurse: Vicki Harris

Matron for Child Health: Michelle Hardwick

Neonatal clinical Lead: Dr Nicholas Barnes
