What did you do before you took up this volunteering role?

I was self employed in financial services

Why did you decided to volunteer at Northampton General Hospital? What did you want to get out of being a volunteer?

I’ve wanted to move into healthcare for many years but wanted to take a steady, sensible approach. Volunteering gave me the insight of the ‘real’ NHS whilst also offering support to the staff particularly after the pressures of Covid and lockdowns.

How long have you volunteered?

Since July 2021 with a brief break early 2022 due to other family commitments.

What skills have you developed through your experience of volunteering?

How to change beds correctly, cleaning of wards and clinical areas, how to help without obstructing staff. So much really, I’ve loved the whole experience.

What advice would you give to other people looking to volunteer at Northampton General Hospital?

Give it a try and also if possible try different areas of the hospital. If you’re not sure, ask someone and just jump in to whatever needs doing (within your remit).

What did you do before you took up this volunteering role?

I lived in Holland and was working at a nursery and a care home

Why did you decided to volunteer at Northampton General Hospital? What did you want to get out of being a volunteer?

I love helping patients and letting them know I am there to support them. I saw this great opportunity with the Volunteering Services at NGH. I wanted the opportunity to work with patients and from this I was able to better my communication skills and was able to work with different health care professionals.

How long have you volunteered?

I have been volunteering since March 2021

What skills have you developed through your experience of volunteering?

I have developed my communication skills by working with health care professionals and from working in a team. My skills have improved massively, for example; when I was approached by a patient who required assistance, I used my initiative to promptly inform a member of the ward staff to ensure that the patient got the best care.

What advice would you give to other people looking to volunteer at Northampton General Hospital?

I honestly would strongly encourage them to take this great opportunity. There are so many learning opportunities as a volunteer and the support I got from all the staff on the wards and Volunteer Service team was incredible. I am thankful to be part of it.

What did you do before you took up this volunteering role?

I still work full time at a car dealership I had no volunteering experience

Why did you decided to volunteer at Northampton General Hospital? What did you want to get out of being a volunteer?

For some time I had been looking for a role where I can help others and that also fit around my current work.

How long have you volunteered?

Since August 2021

What skills have you developed through your experience of volunteering?

Being ward based I have become confident in communicating with patients and to be a good listener. I have also gained a better understanding of how a ward functions which will help me in the future.

What advice would you give to other people looking to volunteer at Northampton General Hospital?

A volunteer role at NGH is rewarding in so many ways. Look at all the different opportunities available as a volunteer and you will find there is a great team ready to support and help you. Also you can work hours to fit in with your other commitments.
