Around the time you're nearing 36 weeks of pregnancy, it's a good idea to start packing a bag for you and your baby, no matter where you plan to have your baby. After your baby arrives, you'll usually stay in the hospital for about six hours to two days, so you only need to bring enough clothes and personal items for that time. If you need more things later, you can ask friends or family to bring them. What you decide to bring is entirely up to you, and we've provided some ideas below.
- Important documents like maternity notes, your birth plan and contact numbers
- Comfy old t-shirt or labour-friendly clothing
- Socks for labour
- Personal items such as toiletries, tissues, a tennis ball or massager, massage oils, pillow, water spray and lip balm
- Toiletries including soap, toothbrush, toothpaste
- Hair accessories for long hair
- Energy tablets and any medication you are taking
- Snacks, magazines, puzzles and books
- Change for parking, your phone and charger
- Breast pads, maternity pads and disposable knickers
- Supportive bra for breastfeeding if required
- Dressing gown, slippers and nightwear
- Comfortable clothing to go home in
- Baby grows or gowns
- Vests, a hat and cardigans
- Baby bath towel
- Nappies, cotton wool and baby blanket
