Foundation Training

Developing the clinical leaders of tomorrow

 Dr Ali Habib cropped

“I’m an academic trainee in clinic leadership and management and Northampton is one of the few places in the UK that runs this academic programme. Northampton is developing the clinical leaders of tomorrow.” Dr Ali Habib

If you are a post-graduate looking to develop your career in a clinically-led organisation where quality improvement, leadership, teaching and research are highly valued, look no further than Northampton General Hospital.

For our FY1 doctors, we provide a structured shadowing programme to introduce you to your new role. This includes training sessions and ward-based shadowing so you can meet your team before you start and familiarise yourself with the day-to-day running of the ward or department

As a busy district general hospital, we can guarantee all our trainees will get great exposure to clinical scenarios and decision making - with opportunities to carry out procedures and skills that you won’t necessarily get to do at a bigger hospital.

With a relatively low consultant-to-trainee ratio, we offer high levels of education support, mentoring and personalised training.

Quality improvement and patient safety

Through our well-established quality improvement programme, our trainees are directly involved in researching, proposing and delivering evidence-based improvement right here. Nationally, we have one of the highest rates for abstracts, posters, and presentations accepted for national and international meetings.

“Northampton General is an ideal place for developing your own projects on patient safety. In terms of quality improvement, this hospital is one of the best that I’ve seen.”

Simulation training

Simulated learning scenarios provide invaluable opportunities to observe, develop and test how healthcare professionals work together and interact with their environment and equipment. When you work with us, we’ll support your professional and personal development with a comprehensive training programme in our purpose-built simulation suite.

You’ll also develop your clinical and personal skills with our point-of-care training programme –bringing scenario-based learning to your workplace.

Watch our video to hear from one of our faculty team, consultant anesthetist and interventionist Dr Jonathan Wilkinson

“We see simulation as a vital part of training. Almost any scenario you can think of, we can replicate it.” - Dr Jonathan Wilkinson
