DAISY award founders welcomed to Northampton General Hospital
Bonnie and Mark Barnes and Riley Carraher with our DAISY award honourees
The founders of an international awards programme have visited Northampton General Hospital to celebrate the first anniversary of the awards.
Last Monday (2 July) the hospital welcomed the founders of the DAISY Foundation, the Barnes family, for a celebration event to mark one year since the awards were launched at NGH.
Mark and Bonnie Barnes along with their granddaughter Riley, visited NGH to unveil a new display dedicated to past and present DAISY awards recipients.
Located on Hospital Street, the hall of fame publically recognises those who have delivered exceptional care to their patients and their families. Following this the family were invited to an afternoon tea celebration with the DAISY honourees to mark their achievements and talk about the reasons behind the creation of the awards.
Natalie Green, associate director of nursing, described the importance of the visit “As one of the leading hospitals that run the DAISY award in the UK we were honoured when the Barnes family accepted our invitation to join us at today’s event. It’s important for us to be able to hear first-hand about Patrick and the legacy his family has created following his death.”
The award scheme was founded in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes following his death from complications due to the auto-immune disease ITP. Following Patrick’s death the family felt compelled to say ‘thank you’ to nurses publically following which the DAISY awards were founded.
NGH awarded their first DAISY award last August and has since awarded 12 midwives and nurses with the accolade. The awards have expanded to incorporate the DAISY trainee awards and the DAISY team award both launched in 2018.
