The Acute Pain Service (APS) provides advice on all acute pain problems at Northampton General Hospital during working hours. Acute pain problems out of hours should be referred to the first on call anaesthetist via the hospital switchboard.
Specific areas of expertise include provision of postoperative patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) and post operative patient controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA). Referrals for in-patient acute on chronic pain problems are also initially dealt with by the APS.
The APS provides comprehensive hospital wide training programmes for Nurses, Midwives, AHP’s and wider multi-disciplinary teams in management and monitoring of acute pain.
