Our policies and procedures

Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust (NGH) is committed to high quality patient care and we are continually striving to improve our services. The Trust has policies and procedures in place to assist in maintaining high quality patient care, working practices, partnership working and financial procedures.

Corporate Policies

Corporate Policies are guidelines for decision-making and action. They indicate what staff can and cannot do in certain situations and constrain employees within the bounds as stated by the organisation. Guidelines, procedures and protocols, reflect the values of Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust and give direction, instruction in methods and requirements. They allow for independent decision-making, where appropriate.

We have a process for the production, review and ratification of these policies. Draft policies are written, they are then consulted upon with relevant stakeholders prior to the Corporate Policy approval process. Trust formal Corporate Policies are subject to approval by the appropriate Group (e.g. Hospital Management Group) or Committee who will have delegated powers of approval of these documents.

All Corporate Policies are subject to a systematic review process.

Departmental Policies and Procedures

Departments at the Trust may develop individual policies and procedures for implementation. If the subject is already subject to a Trust-wide policy, the departmental policy or guidance should not reduce the effectiveness of the overarching Trust policy.

Policies and procedures relating to Information Governance, including data protection, confidentiality and security

Information Governance is the way by which the NHS handles all organisational information - in particular the personal and sensitive information of patients and employees. It allows organisations and individuals to ensure that personal information is dealt with legally, securely, efficiently and effectively, in order to deliver the best possible care.

It provides a framework to bringing together the requirements, standards and best practice that apply to the handling of information. It has four fundamental aims:To support the provision of high quality care by promoting the effective and appropriate use of information;

  • To encourage responsible staff to work closely together, preventing duplication of effort and enabling more efficient use of resources;
  • To develop support arrangements and provide staff with appropriate tools and support to enable them to discharge their responsibilities to consistently high standards;
  • To enable organisations to understand their own performance and manage improvement in a systematic and effective way.

The framework currently encompasses:

  • Data Protection Act 1998
  • Freedom of Information Act 2000
  • The Confidentiality Code of Practice
  • Records Management
  • Information Quality Assurance
  • Information Security
  • Information Governance Management
  • Caldicott Guardian

Acting as the “conscience” for the Trust, the Caldicott Guardian plays a key role in ensuring that the Trust satisfies the highest practical standards in handling and safeguarding in particular, patient information. They should actively support work to facilitate and enable appropriate information sharing, advising on options for ethical and lawful processing of information as required. As part of the broader Caldicott function, at NGH, the Caldicott Guardian works with the Senior Information Risk Owner (SIRO), Information Governance Managers and departmental leads.

The Information Commissioner's Office is the UK’s independent authority set up to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals.
