Overview of how we fit into the NHS structure |
The NHS is divided into two sections: primary care and secondary care.
Secondary care is known as acute health care and can be either elective or emergency care. Elective care means either planned specialist medical care or surgery usually following referral from a primary or community health professional such as a GP.
Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust is an Acute Hospital, providing a wide range of general and specialist services.

Organisations we work in partnership with
Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust strives to deliver high quality services working in partnership with other organisations.
We have long recognised the importance of Partnership working and close collaboration with a wide range of both NHS and non-NHS organisations to ensure local delivery of services and their development in accordance with national guidance and local needs. NHS partnerships include our local Primary Care Trusts and neighbouring hospitals, the private sector and not-for-profit community groups.
Primary Care Trusts specify which information on our work will be provided to them. Northamptonshire Teaching Primary Care Trust (PCT) is our main commissioner. The Trust has in place a Service Level Agreement (SLA) where the executive have agreed the financial, activity and quality schedules with Northamptonshire Teaching PCT.
We also have agreements for services we receive from other NHS organisations such as ambulance trusts; they provide information to us as part of these agreements.
The Trust falls within the East Midlands Strategic Health Authority, and we provide a wide range of information to the SHA and both statutory and ad hoc reports.
There is wide range of non-NHS organisations with whom we work ranging from Northamptonshire County Council to voluntary organisations.
Training and Education - In addition to an active in-house training programme accessible to all staff, the trust is working in partnership with South Leicestershire College and Skillspoint on a highly successful NVQ programme that will provide a minimum of 400 trained staff for the trust over the next two years.
The main organisations we work in partnership with are listed below.
