Hospital appeals for volunteers to launch library service for patients

Northampton General Hospital is recruiting volunteers to help launch a new library service for patients.

The mobile library service will be piloted in three wards in early 2017 with plans to eventually extend it to all adult and children’s inpatient wards.

Emma Wimpress, volunteer services manager, said: “We’re looking for volunteers who love reading and have a good general knowledge of books to help us launch our new library service.

“The service will mean some really positive benefits for our patients, particularly those who are with us for an extended period. Research into the effects of reading points to enhanced cognitive function and a slowing down of the natural brain function that comes with age, so there are clear benefits for our patients in terms of maintaining mental agility. Reading can also reduce stress and anxiety and for people who like a spot of bedtime reading at home, it can trigger the body’s sleep mechanisms.

“It’s a great opportunity for people who have some spare time on their hands. If you can commit to at least one four-hour shift a week and you’d be happy to spend time chatting with our patients, we’d love to hear from you.”
