Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine Team

Meet our pre-hospital emergency medicine team. The team is made up of consultants, senior fellows and junior fellows. 

Consultants

Jon Birks

Jon is a consultant in anaesthesia, a PHEM educational supervisor and the PHEM training lead for the Dafen base of the Welsh Emergency Medical, Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS). Prior to taking up his consultant post, Jon trained in anaesthesia in the East Midlands, and was the first anaesthetic trainee in the UK to be appointed to a GMC approved PHEM training programme with Magpas Air Ambulance in 2013. Jon was involved with MAGPAS from 2010-2016. Jon spent 6 months working with the Greater Sydney Area Helicopter Emergency Medical Service and is a founder of our pre-hospital obstetrics emergencies course. He is also an examiner and Deputy Convenor for the Faculty of pre-hospital care examinations, hosted by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Steve Corry-Bass

Steve is a consultant in emergency and pre-hospital medicine, working between Northampton and Magpas Air Ambulance. He has a background in education and is a personal tutor and examiner at Leicester Medical School. He is a keen supporter of the FOAMed (Free Open Access Medical education) movement and contributes to the #EM3 and RCEM learning platforms, being a clinical cases editor for RCEM.

Tristan is a consultant in emergency medicine at Northampton General Hospital and a consultant at Magpas Air Ambulance. He regularly provides clinical and educational supervision for trainees and fellows who are working there. In addition to this he is the training lead for PHEM in the East Midlands, and the clinical director for urgent care (encompassing emergency, acute and ambulatory medicine) at Northampton General Hospital.

Tom Odbert

Tom is an emergency medicine consultant , and also flies with Magpas Air Ambulance as a consultant supervisor. He is part of the Northampton simulation faculty, with an interest in PHEM and sedation teaching, and runs the NGH RCEM core ultrasound course. He is the recruitment lead for the emergency department and has an interest in expedition and wilderness medicine, teaching on the Mountain Medicine Diploma in Nepal.

Senior Fellows

Daniel Sedgewick

Daniel is a specialty registrar in emergency and pre-hospital medicine. He splits his time between NGH and MAGPAS Air Ambulance where he is on an approved training programme in pre-hospital emergency medicine (PHEM) leading to GMC sub-specialty accreditation in this field. He started his NHS career as an emergency medical dispatcher in the EMAS control room and is a trustee of the British Red Cross.
