University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group (UHN) and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) have appointed Andrew Moore as their new Group Chair.

Andrew, who has been a Non-Executive Director (NED) at UHN since February 2023 and at UHL since February 2024, has been appointed to the role of Group Chair following a competitive recruitment process to replace John MacDonald, who retires in July after a 35-year career in the NHS.

As well as an extensive knowledge of both organisations and their opportunities to improve care, Andrew brings world-class insight into quality and culture from the commercial sector. He held a wide variety of senior positions including Directorships at Marks & Spencer, Asda-Walmart and Chief Commercial Officer at Wilko. He also founded his own consultancy in South Africa where he partnered with Woolworths SA and is the Vice Chair of the charity Breast Cancer Now.

Andrew said: “It is an honour to be appointed chair of two brilliant organisations and I am looking forward to working with communities, health and care partners, and colleagues across our area to ensure we deliver the best possible care to the people we serve.

“We face some tough challenges, which is why our partnership is so important. Our work together as UHN and UHL will help ensure we deliver services in a more sustainable way both now and in the future.”

The three neighbouring Trusts provide care in a range of settings, to a population of more than two million people in the East Midlands. The Trusts have many shared services, jointly employing clinicians and delivering world leading research through the Leicester Biomedical Research Centre.

UHN and UHL launched a formal provider collaboration in October 2023. With a combined budget of £2.4bn and a 29,000-strong workforce, they are working at scale to reduce health inequalities across the region, increase access to services both in and out of hospital, and improving efficiency, productivity and quality.

Richard Mitchell, Group Chief Executive of UHN and UHL, said: “I am pleased Andrew has been appointed as our new Group Chair.  I look forward to working with him to improve services and the health of the communities we serve.

“We need to work effectively with system partners, academic partners and communities to ensure we offer accessible, safe and effective care for all. We have an important opportunity to work together to prevent ill-health in the first place. I have no doubt that Andrew’s experience of high-performing international organisations will help us achieve these ambitions.”

Andrew will begin his role as Group Chair on 1 July 2024.
